IVORY BOXED TORTOISESHELL WHIST MARKERS CIRCA 1820
Delightful, small, 1.1" diameter turned ivory box with piquet decoration of gold to the lid. Inside is a complete set of four tortoiseshell markers used in the card game of Whist, also with piquet decoration of gold hearts bordered in silver. Whilst this kind of object may have resided in the homes of the better-off for evenings of entertainment, this kind of item was small enough to be carried in the jacket pocket of the inveterate gentleman gambler who would have taken this and other small gambling items when visiting gentlemens' clubs.
